CREATING A BALLOON ARCH USING THE BALLOON DECORATING STRIP

Balloon Decorating StripThe Balloon Decorating Strip can be used with any size balloon.  This product is your fastest, easiest option to create a professional looking balloon arch or column. It really is as easy as it looks!

First you need balloons.  CLICK HERE TO SHOP OUR BALLOONS.

You can fill balloons with air or helium.  The strip has two hole sizes.  The smaller hole will accommodate 5″ to 9″ latex balloons.  The larger holes are for 11″ to 18″ latex balloons.  You don’t have to use all the holes is you choose.  The strip will hold up to 12 balloons per foot.

  • Measure and cut your balloon decorating strip to the correct length.
  • Grab the knot that you tied and insert into an open hole on the balloon strip.  Pull the knot completely through the hole.
  • If you are doing a single balloon teardrop arch, then insert them all on the same side. You may have to move some balloons once the helium filled balloons lift and arch.
  • For other more full arch styles, insert the balloons on top and bottom of the strip (like in the picture above).
  • Tie down the ends, the helium filled balloons will naturally cause the tape to arch.
  • Keep the strip when you are done because you can use it again!

BALLOON ARCH DIRECTIONS – HOW TO CREATE A BALLOON ARCH

Planning phase: determine the size, materials (frame or helium), balloon colors, how many balloons do you need.

SIZE:  Measure the height and width of the area where the arch will be displayed.  You will need to do a quick calculation now…

For a balloon arch with the same height and width:Balloon Arch Calculation

(1 1/2 x height) + width = approximate total length

For a balloon arch that is wider than it is tall:

width + height = approximate total length

For a balloon arch that is taller than it is wide:

(2 x height) + width = approximate total length

IMPORTANT:  Make sure all the balloon are inflated to the same size. We recommend that you make a cardboard template to properly size your balloons.

FRAME OR HELIUM:

For helium filled balloons, you can rent a tank from a local helium supplier or welding supply company.  They should supply a balloon inflator with their rental.  You will need the Balloon Decorating strip, nylon fishing twine or nylon twine.  If using helium, the helium will lift the balloons so no frame is needed.  Note an 11″ balloon will require .5 cubic feet of helium.  If you estimate that are needing 100 11″ latex balloons, you will need a tank that has at least 50 cubic feet of helium in it.

11″ latex balloons require .5 cf of helium

17″ latex balloons require 1.75 cf of helium

36″ latex balloons require 15 cf of helium

Helium filled balloons will not last longer than 8-12 hours.  Be sure to pretreat your balloons with Hi Float to extend their float time to a week or longer.

For air filled balloons, you will need a sturdy frame to hold up your balloons. A strong, flexible material works well…a material like conduit, PVC or an aluminum or plastic rod.  For extra support, you may need to attach a wire to the ceiling and/or find a very sturdy base to hold each side of the frame.  Air filled balloons will last much longer than helium filled balloons. Air filled balloons can be difficult to blow up by mouth.  You can buy or rent and air pump or even a nitrogen bottle.

COLOR:  One color arches are the easiest to make.  You can also combine two or more colors to create a spiral pattern.  Time to get creative!

QUANTITY: Refer to the calculations above to determine the length. If you are doing a teardrop arch, you will only need 1 balloon per foot.  For other arches, like the one above, you will generally need 4-6 balloons per foot of length.

SINGLE BALLOONS ARCH (TEARDROP) (STRING OF PEARLS) INSTRUCTIONS

String Of Pearls Balloon Arch

Determine the correct size of the arch.  Use the calculations above for help.

If you are using airfilled balloons, set up the frame.  If you are helium filling the balloons, stretch out your line and secure each end with a heavy object.  Be sure to leave extra line on the end in case you need it as well as to make it easier to move and tie down.

Inflate balloons, size them and tie a knot.

Thread knot of the balloons through the hole in the archstrip.

Count the holes down to determine the best location for your next balloon. The balloons should be just barely touching once the arch is in the arch form.  This may take a few minutes of trial and error to get the correct distance.

Repeat down the entire length of the strip.  The helium balloons will naturally lift into the arch.

If you are air filling balloons, you can tape or tie the strip to the frame when complete.

SPIRAL BALLOON ARCH INSTRUCTIONS

Determine the length of the arch. Don’t remember the calculations?  Here you go…

For a balloon arch with the same height and width:

(1 1/2 x height) + width = approximate total length

For a balloon arch that is wider than it is tall:

width + height = approximate total length

For a balloon arch that is taller than it is wide:

(2 x height) + width = approximate total length

If you are using airfilled balloons, set up the frame.  If you are helium filling the balloons, stretch out your line and secure each end with a heavy object.  Be sure to leave extra line on the end in case you need it as well as to make it easier to move and tie down.

If you are using the Balloon Decorating Strip then just inflate, knot and start inserting the balloons.  Be sure to insert on both sides of the tape.  The location of each color with determine how the colors spiral.  Shift the colors to create the look you want.  Again trial and error is the key here.  Rotate the color to create the spiral look.

If you are not using the Balloon Decorating Strip then follow these instructions instead…

Inflate two latex balloons.  Tie the necks together.

Tie two balloons together

Repeat that step with another set of balloons.

Tie two balloons together

Now, cross these two sets of balloons together in the middle where the knots are a twist the two sets together forming a single cluster of four balloons.

Balloon Cluster for archballoon cluster arch

Start at one end of the arch.  Place the cluster against the line or frame.  Wrap the neck of one balloon around the frame or archline. Twist it around to lock it into place. Repeat the process of adding each cluster to the arch.  Be sure to shift the colors is you are creating a spiral.  Make sure the clusters fit nice and snug.

Do this down the entire length of the line.  If using helium, carefully move the line into place and tie down securely.  Your anchors needs to be strong.  Use something really heavy like a filled gallon water bottle and cover and decorate to make your arch.

Now step back an admire your work!
